4 reasons why promotional giveaways work well in trade shows and conferences Guest Post By Tim Brown

Trade shows and conferences are held for the express purpose of bringing together every kind of producer, manufacturer, supplier, and consumer of an industry, so that everyone can gain by sharing information with the public, and also for launching of new products, systems, and services in a big way. The companies that sponsor or participate do so to make their presence felt both in the market and among their target audience.

What is a giveaway?

Giving away of gifts and mementos at such industry events has become the norm. The giveaways, which can be anything small and utilitarian is embossed with the company name, logo, milestone, or the latest products image. The main motive is the announcing of an organization’s latest achievement or significant milestone, which is then distributed to the visitors so that they carry home a souvenir and remember the company and its product later.

Typical giveaways:

Most common giveaways are small and relatively less expensive items like pens, key chains, lighters, Frisbees, or stress balls. Some companies might up the ante and give away diaries, digital clocks, alarm clocks, T shirts, etc. But these kinds of more expensive items are usually not given to the public, but to other industry people like manufacturers or suppliers. These items are meant to be of use and value to the people receiving the gifts and are supposed to be reminded of the company and its products or services at a strategic time.

Industry standards:

Sometimes, these giveaways can be highly sought after items since they serve a particular purpose or perform a service which can be quite useful to the industry insiders. Compasses, paper weights, stethoscopes, thermometers, barometers, screw driver sets, etc. are some simple examples of such useful giveaways. Like at an hoteliers convention, it might make better sense to give away holiday packages. Likewise, at a restaurateurs convention, a dinner for two is a great idea.

Novelty value:

There are some companies and industries that go out of their way to come up with unique ideas for giveaways. There was this one company which installed a slot machine and issued some complimentary chips for people to play; the game was designed with the company logo, and the company’s products were to be won as prizes! Giving away gift coupons for your products or services is also a very good idea; so is conducting a lucky draw: get your visitors to drop their cards into a box; tell them that on the last day there will be a lucky draw and the winner will get a surprise gift. Here the benefit is you get plenty of visiting cards for future business contacts. Though there are many conventional giveaways, the one quirky novelty item will become a conversation piece, and the company will get its money’s worth for years to come.

Tim has been a longtime advocate of promotional giveaways and has written numerous posts on their benefits at customgear.com.au. From promotional caps to pens and t-shirts, Tim has used them all and encourages marketers to develop a proper branding strategy.

Here in Michigan you could say we skipped right over spring and dove into summer, the season for company outings, golf tournaments and many other types of company outdoor events. All of these types of events are great venues to use promotional products to expose your brand. You can use them as giveaways or even raffle them off to raise funds for a local charity. Below I have outlined three simple keys to consider when choosing your promo items this summer.

#1 Dynamic Giveaways Stand Out
You must stand out from the norm; most will give out the same old same old. If you have been to any event like a golf outing you surely received some worthless promotional gizmo that you trashed before you even left the event. Step it up and provide a dynamic giveaway, for example don’t just provide a plain cooler, raffle off a rolling cooler with speakers and an iPod port.

#2 Make It Useful
Your event promotional giveaway should be an item that is useful. Your marketing dollars will stretched to the max if the item you give can be used almost every day by the recipient. Some good examples are custom printed Lip Balm, Post-it Note Pads or a Pen with a built in USB drive.

#3 – Be Relevant
The promotional product you select must have some relevance to it. Your marketing message and or your brand should be tied into the item you choose. It should be fun, cleaver, dynamic, useful and relevant. This will give you the most bang for your marketing buck.

Event Marketing Strategies for a Unique Brand Experience
Guest Post By Clint Barton

The process of event marketing is no less than any other science because you have to understand every aspect of it. If you are a business owner then trade shows can be your opportunity to market your company. However, to be successful at it, there are a lot of things to learn. You need to be aware of the mindset of your targeted customers. You have to keep the event error free. Building up your image is the most important part of your marketing strategy. With proper planning, you can end up impressing a lot of people and finding success.

Some helpful strategies

Before you take part in a trade show, you must decide what you want from it. You have to decide whether you want to let people know about your new services or you want more people to know about the existing ones. You must also need a plan to turn every possible lead into your customer. For that, you need strategies which can impress people instantly. Every time someone approaches your exhibition booth, you have to make sure that the person leaves as your customer. Your job is not completed at the event either. You need to collect contact information for as many people as possible. Keep sending them promotional emails starting the very next day.

Use event marketing technology to your benefit. Today, the world of technology has changed the way marketing plans are executed. Your booth should be a space that makes good use of gadgets. They offer you the flexibility of preparing promotional displays which are interactive. Free gifts can be very helpful when it comes to promotions. You must have little freebies for those who stop by your booth. It can be as small as a keychain. However, no matter what item you gift, you should brand it with your logo or name. This helps in branding. You surely don’t run your business all on your own; you have a team of workers. Bring key players to the trade show and promote your business as a team.

Experiential marketing can help

Experiential marketing has become the new age strategy for better marketing. Trade shows are the best for such activities. This brings your customers closer to you thereby giving you a chance to interact with them. There is no better way to win customer loyalty than to be emotionally attached to them. Apart from increasing the loyalty, this kind of marketing strategy can enhance your brand awareness. As you interact with people personally, it leaves them with a good impression. They will have a better brand recall than what they had before this interaction.

If your product had any negativity attached to it in the past, then direct communication with customers will help to strengthen the product. You can explain to them how you have changed and improved your product. Any kind of large scale marketing is easier with this strategy. However, with experiential marketing, make sure that you appear as a reliable person worthy of their trust.

A corporate golf outing is an excellent way to appreciate your customers for their patronage. Golf is a sport that is enjoyed by the elite in the corporate world. From the office assistant to the CEO, every cadre of staff in the business community treasure an opportunity to leave the office and enjoy a nice golf outing. All staff will have a chance to relate informally with clients, take time to relax, and give out golf-themed, branded promotional products.

Preparing for the event is quite easy. The corporate marketing department can spare head this initiative. The attendee list should be compiled after tee times have been reserved and invitations have been sent out. All clients that participate will be happy to collect corporate branded packages that contain golf hats, tees, balls and towels. All these items should have the company’s name and logo printed on them. In addition, golf pencils, balls and tees bearing the company’s logo may be used during this event. All these items will help to promote the company in a quiet but impactful way.

The actual day of the event will be a fun-filled day for all. Several employees will have a chance to relate with customers out of the work environment. There will be a lot of chatting about personal and unofficial issues as well as the golf game itself. This is a golden opportunity for workers to study their clients closely and build more intimate relationships. They could even discover that they have a couple of common personal interests. This could eventually result in closer interactions outside the work setting.

Clients will feel highly honored because their loyalty is openly appreciated. Very often, customers feel that their patronage has been taken for granted. Therefore, recognizing them openly would boost their self esteem. They will treat the company with greater honor because of this unique show of appreciation. Customers that have only been interacting with employees through email and phone will longer be faceless.

Promotional products like golf hats, custom printed golf balls and tees are usually special treasures for customers who are occasional golfers. They will wear their new branded golf hat and eventually tuck it away in their golf back so they can put in on again. An imprinted umbrella and water bottle are appropriate for those who spend a long time on the golf course. Every time a customer makes use of these items, they help to promote the corporate brand. Some of their friends who don’t receive such lovely items from their vendors could easily become envious.

It is important to offer prizes when a corporate golf outing becomes a novelty competition. Clients that win either the ‘closest to the hole’ competition or possess the farthest drive can be given branded golf shirts. At the end of the day, a branded golf computer or wrist watch can serve as an excellent gift for clients who have the best scores. Freebies such as tee holders and golf balls can be given to everyone else.

A corporate golf outing to appreciate your esteemed clients can easily become a treasured annual event. Such opportunities to honor your clients and build better business relations don’t occur frequently. So by giving out promotional products such as awards and branded gifts the company is appreciating their clients in a very impactful way. In the future, as clients make use of these items, they are marketing the company in a unique and effective way.

Creating a client appreciation outing is an excellent way to promote your company. Incorporating promotional products for use during and after the event is an effective way of building your brand.

I can’t tell you how often we get clients contacting us without a plan on how or even why they are going to use the promotional products they want to order. They just know they need them to help expose their brand. Below you will find four great case studies to help stimulate your thought process before your next promotional purchase.

Product Number: 137
Description: Phone Stand
Industry: Tradeshow

Use: A tech supplier was in need of giveaways for an industry tradeshow. They needed something inexpensive yet useful to their audience.

How was it distributed: The phone holders were handed out at the booth, and folks from around the exhibit hall came around just to find out what these things were.

Result or ROI: They were very impressed! Best of all they drew in the right people to the booth and gave a chance to give them the “pitch”. Great idea!

Product Number: 7039
Description: Auto Safety Kit
Industry: Banking

Use: A gift that was not gender specific and was useful and could be branded and had a high-perception of value.

How was it distributed: A Distributor was working with a bank who asked them to bring to them ideas for an incentive gift. The bank wanted to set-up an incentive gift to give to new depositors who opened a new account at the bank for over $1,000.00. They were looking for an item that would be useful and a gift that would have a high perceived value. The gift had to be one that would work for both men and women. The bank had established a budget of $20.00 per item. The bank projected that over a 2 month period they would set a goal of 200 new accounts. Obviously, this item would need to have the bank logo on it, so it would need to be branded.

The distributor came to HIT Promotional Products for ideas and they decided on HIT Item no. 7039, Auto Safety Kit. This product addressed all the parameters that had been set-forth by the bank. A gift that was not gender specific and was useful and could be branded and had a high-perception of value.

Result or ROI: The bank was able to achieve their goal of 200 new depositors in less than the 2 month time period they had targeted.

Product Number: 132
Description: Rubberized LED Flashlight with Clip
Industry: Credit Union

Use: A credit union needed something to hand out at a college campus for a promotion of student loans. They needed something that would be useful to students and would stay with them wherever they went. An item on a key ring would help with ongoing visibility, and flashlights could be useful for students who find themselves out at night more often. The style of the 132 had strong potential to appeal to college students.

How was it distributed: The 132s were handed out on campus during the credit union’s visit. Students were invited to come to the credit union’s table and hear a quick pitch about student loans, followed by a free flashlight key tag gift with the credit union’s brand.

Result or ROI: Over 1,000 flashlights were handed out to students, which went on many students’ key rings, keeping the credit union’s brand fresh in their minds.

Product Number: 1200
Description: Plush Big Paw Bear with Shirt
Industry: Insurance

Use: Insurance is a product/Service that most end users or targets do not like to talk about. It is a necessary evil for most people. To most people this means that they need to spend money for insurance on what they may never get a return on their investment.

In general, Plush is an instant gratification category. Give someone a teddy bear and you will see that it puts a smile on anyone’s face immediately. OR, long enough to break the ice to chat about the service, in this case insurance, that a company is trying to sell to customers.

How was it distributed: The referral process is huge in the insurance agency. So this top 5 Insurance Company gives away a set of teddy bears on the day of signing the documents for whatever insurance plan that a family signs up for.

Walk into any branch location, sign up for the New Homeowner’s policy and receive a free teddy bear, hence softening the perception of insurance and most importantly putting a smile on the face of the new policy holder.

Result or ROI: The Franchisee offices continue to reorder the teddy bear because insurance is a very tough sell in today’s world, and new customers are walking out with a smile on their face. The gifts have enabled the agents to build a rapport and work on future referrals. Now they are not just the insurance agent, but leave customers with a positive image and a feeling of friendship.

When purchasing promotional items you need to put together a plan and track your results to ensure your marketing dollars are working toward your goals.

When most people think about how to market their company, they think of traditional media – such as television, print, radio and billboard advertising. But would it surprise you to know that promotional products are actually more effective?

According to Promotional Products Association International’s PPB magazine, a November 2012 study conducted of about700 people going through LaGuardia Airport (NY) reported that 70% of the travelers recalled getting at least 1 promotional item in the past year and 25% had one with them. 88% could remember the advertiser on at least 1 product when they were asked. What’s more, 82% own 1 – 10 promo items and 47% retain those items a year or more.

Promo pens and pencils are writing instruments with both flair and function. Imprinted with your company’s logo, contact information and website URL, these promotional pens last much longer than a typical business card – in fact, they last as long as the pen lasts!

Pencils and Pens Can Be Used In Many Ways

Customized pens can be used for a variety of marketing efforts such as new customer acquisition, repeat business rewards, tradeshow giveaways, contest prizes, coupon incentives and more. The fact that your promotional pens actually have a purpose ensures that your target audience will keep your pen or pencil – and advertising message – at hand.

Some companies also like to use promotional pens and custom pencils as rewards for incentive programs to motivate employees. These types of customized writing instruments also make good premiums for companies that want to motivate buyers or C-level decision-makers to do business with their company.

You’ve probably seen promotional writing instruments at doctors’ offices. They are often given these promotional pens and pencils by pharmaceutical representatives who are attempting to keep the medication’s name in the doctor’s line of sight. This is especially handy when the doctor is writing prescriptions.

Another way organizations in the healthcare industry utilize promotional pens and custom pencils for their marketing outreach efforts is to offer them to patients. After all, most patients have a choice where they go for their health care needs. And in times of a crisis or health care emergency, it is useful to have a doctor’s office phone number imprinted on the pen or pencil itself.

Use Brand Name Pens for Longer Promotional Value

Does your organization represent certain values you want reflected in your BIC custom pens? Get eco-friendly brand exposure with the Bic Clic Stic Ecolutions® Recycled Ballpoint Pen. This popular Bic pen is made from recycled materials and is available with medium or fine point, and in blue or black ink. You can also add the universal recycle symbol at no additional charge to drive your eco-friendly message home even further.

Event planners often include promotional pens and custom pencils in attendees’ registration materials. These custom writing instruments are perfect for taking notes at seminars and workshops. A popular choice is the BIC Clic Stic pen. These BIC promotional pens come in a variety of color and ink options, making them completely customizable. Purchasing brand name promotional products such as BIC items is the best approach when you need something dependable.

At some point almost every person has received some type of promotional item from a business or organization. While these promotional goods do serve a purpose, they are often under-utilized, thus making the items less than effective. That is absolutely not the case with promotional budget pens. One of the great things about distributing promotional budget pens to potential customers is that they truly are functional items, as opposed to lots of other types of promotional objects that rarely or never actually are put into use, pens are used by almost all of us.

It doesn’t matter what type of business is involved, these pens are always exceptional tools for reminding potential customers of the business. When a person receives one of these pens and places it in his or her pocket or pocketbook there is a high probability that the pen will actually be utilized at some point. Maybe when the person needs to sign a check or credit slip they will use the pen and think about the business that passed out the pen.

At times the person who received the pen will let someone else use the pen. That person may stop to read the print on the pen which will further expand the item’s promotional capabilities. For small local enterprises such as gas stations and repair shops, art galleries, shoe repair stores, craft and hobby shops, apartment rental companies and restaurants, these reasonably priced pens can serve as regular reminders of the presence of and services supplied by these organizations.

The usage of inexpensive pens for promotional purposes is not limited to businesses. These pens can be used by a variety of non-profit and for-profit organizations to raise awareness of their causes and purposes. Sports teams at all levels from amateur to professional can gain from handing out promotional pens as can musical acts, academic associations, youth and senior groups and theatrical groupings. Quite frequently people will highly value them and save these pens as souvenirs.

Various sizes and styles of promotional pens are always available. Some businesses prefer to use stick pens while others favor retractable pens. Felt-tip markers are sometimes used as promotional tools as are extra-small, novelty-style pens. The cost of promotional pens is typically very low, making them a very cost-effective form of advertising. When these pens are ordered in big quantities the price often drops to just pennies per pen. That being said promotional budget pens offer quite a bit of bang for the promotional buck.

Guest Post By Ben Adeagbo

Networking is said to be the exchange of information or services among individuals, groups, or institutions; specifically: the cultivation of productive relationships for employment or business.

If relating with others or networking with them is so important, the question now is “How then can I network with people?”

Get some useful tips that will help you to initiate connections and get the best of networking.

1. Believe in Yourself.

This is the most important thing to consider in achieving any tangible success in any aspect of life. It is only those who believe in themselves and what they do or want to do that will go far in life.

To believe in oneself simply means to be bold, courageous and to have confidence in yourself, because people can tell if you are fearful or shy when approaching them. These are some of the attributes of a champion you may say, yes, it takes a man with a champion’s heart to be the first to start a conversation.

As you can see from our definition above, networking involves exchange of information between two or more people and to get any information from someone you are meeting probably for the first time, you must have the belief that you are not inferior to anybody. If this kind of thoughts preoccupy your mind, your self-esteem will be boosted and you won’t find it difficult to network with people.

Action plan; Next time you meet with someone you don’t know before and you want to network, even if you an introvert or a shy person, tell yourself that, the person is human being like I am and give yourself a smile. And if you are rejected, say to yourself something like; they don’t know what they miss by rejecting me and move on. The worst answer or reaction you can get from people is shunning you, when this happens it shouldn’t affect you if you believe in yourself. After all, it cannot take anything away from you. It is when you talk about it or show some unpleasant attitude that makes it problem. No one can be acceptable to others until he is first acceptable to himself.

2. Be Prepared

Whatever you do without adequate preparation will yield little or no result. There is nothing that is too small to prepare for. Don’t feel meeting people is a minor thing to border yourself about preparation especially if you find it difficult to talk whenever there is more than one person in a place. If you don’t prepare, fear can make you freeze up or your tongue. You know the result? You will lose out in the race of networking with people.

3. Think of what you can contribute not what to receive.

Another important virtue that can help you in networking with people is to think of what you are willing to offer to make the relationship grow when it start, and not what you will get from it. The human nature always seek for what to get and think little of what to give and this kind of attitude has caused many people great relationship that would have been a profitable one.

You must understand this essential fact in networking; that is, every relationship should be a symbiotic and not a parasitic one. In fact, you will always get yes from every approach you make to others when trying to network if you let them know you are a contributor and not a consumer.

4. Follow up.

Staying in touch is the proof of your seriousness in networking with people. If you collect people’s information may be complementary card, e-mail address or phone numbers and you keep the information in your archive without any single call back, there’s every tendency that you are going to lose that relationship.

When you meet people and collect their details, make sure you follow up even if all you have to say is ‘how are you doing’ you will be doing yourself a lot of good in sustaining the relationship.

5. Networking takes time and effort.

If you think networking is all about the first meeting you will be disappointed by the time more time and effort is demanded from you. To build a lasting relationship you must not count on the energy you put into it especially when it outweigh the cost and the ultimate goal is to gain from it. The best way to think is to see network as investment.

If you are working on developing strong branding for your company, you will benefit from reading these tips as well as consulting with a reputable graphic designer or a graphic design company. If they don’t confirm the following, you’ll know they cannot be all that good.

1. Understand your strengths
Keep evaluating the expertise of your staff and use any new skills for exploring new niche areas and making the current ones stronger. The skills you can look for among your staff members are professional expertise, technology friendliness or strong professional relationships with an important client.

2. Increase participation in social media
Make a commitment to use social media like LinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter regularly. You can use these forums to invite possible clients for prospective discussions and promote your company’s expertise. In addition, diversify your friend and follower lists by motivating people to like or follow your page.

3. Learn about your competitors
Study your competitors and review their brochures, business cards and websites. Then put yourself in your client’s shoes and think how a prospective or current client will compare your company with your competitors. Why should they choose you? Use whatever you learned through this exercise to brainstorm ways of developing your business and becoming the most preferred choice in your industry.

4. Be responsive
Establish efficient customer service practices, such as prompt answering of the phone lines and shortened time frames for responding to emails. Your customers and business partners who try to contact you have needs and they will develop an opinion about your company based on how timely your responses were.

Think about a restaurant you like to visit frequently. Do you prefer it because of prompt services? Would you still like it if the food took longer to arrive? If service is slow, or slower than what customers expect, they will complain or even change the product or service providers. Good customer service will build a positive reputation for your company.

Be communicative
On an ongoing basis, develop a database of contact and email information for current and potential customers. You can then use this information to send e-newsletters to these customers. The e-newsletters can contain information about new products and services, staff achievements, tax submission details, payroll deadlines, and links to state websites, anything that can be informative or useful for these customers.

Use traditional marketing methods
Although you may be doing more of digital marketing, don’t abandon the traditional promotion methods, like brochures, newsletters and promotional products. Make good use of radio, displays and television for advertising. Although many people are now more accessible online, TV and radio provide options for targeted marketing, as the viewership is based on the program type.

Remain flexible
If your marketing plan last year was very successful, remember that it may not work today. You have to come up with and implement new marketing strategies. Keep yourself flexible and open to new methods of advertising.
